Barbell Front Squat

The barbell front squat is a compound lower-body movement in which the barbell is held in a front-rack position across the anterior deltoids, demanding a markedly more upright torso than its back-squat counterpart. How to do it
Set the bar across the front delts with elbows high and fingertips under the bar. Clear the rack and step back; feet shoulder-width, toes slightly out. Brace hard — the front rack punishes any spinal flexion. Descend with the torso as vertical as possible; knees travel forward over the toes. Hit full depth, then drive the elbows up and chest through to stand.

Common mistakes

- Excessive forward lean of the torso — prioritise keeping the chest tall by improving thoracic mobility and ankle dorsiflexion before adding load, since forward lean under a front-rack bar places disproportionate stress on the lower spine.
- Allowing the knees to cave medially — consciously push the knees out in line with the toes from the first inch of descent to the top of the drive, which keeps the adductors and glutes properly engaged.
- Rising onto the toes at the bottom — if heel elevation occurs, address ankle mobility or use a small heel raise temporarily, as losing heel contact destabilises the entire lift and limits depth.
