Every training plan is written in a language, and if you're new to lifting, nobody hands you the dictionary. A programme tells you to do "3 × 8–12 at RPE 8", to hit your "compound lifts" first, to "deload" every few weeks — and you're left guessing whether you're doing it right. This guide is the dictionary. It covers the gym terms and resistance training terminology you'll actually meet in a beginner's programme, explains each one in plain English, and shows how they fit together, so you can read a plan and know exactly what it's asking of you.
The terms are grouped the way training itself is built: the anatomy of a set, how hard to push, how heavy to go, the kinds of exercise, how a week is structured, and how it progresses over time. Skim the table below, then read the sections covering the words you keep tripping over.

Reps, sets and rest: the anatomy of a set
Everything starts with the rep — short for repetition. A rep is one complete movement of an exercise: lowering the bar to your chest and pressing it back up is one rep of the bench press. String several reps together without stopping and you have a set. When a plan says "3 × 10", it means three sets of ten reps.
Not every set counts the same way. A working set is done at a weight heavy enough to drive progress — the part of the session that matters. A warm-up set uses a lighter weight to prepare the movement; it doesn't count towards your training total. Beginners often log warm-ups as if they were the main event, which makes a session look more productive than it was.
Between sets you take a rest — the pause that lets you recover enough to perform the next set well. Heavier, lower-rep work usually needs longer rests (two to three minutes or more) than lighter, higher-rep work.
Two more words describe how a rep is performed. Tempo is the speed of the movement — often written as four numbers (for example, 3-1-1-0) marking the seconds spent lowering, pausing, lifting, and pausing again. Range of motion, or ROM, is how far the joint travels: a squat to full depth has a larger range of motion than a half squat.
Finally, effort. Failure is the point at which you cannot complete another rep with good technique — not the point where it merely gets hard, and not the point where something hurts. Muscular effort and pain are different signals: pain is a reason to stop and check, not to keep going. Most of the time you'll stop short of failure, and the way we measure how far short is reps in reserve, or RIR: the number of reps you felt you had left when you racked the weight. Stop with two solid reps still in you, and that's 2 RIR. This one idea is the bridge to the most useful term in modern training.
What is RPE? Effort and reps in reserve
RPE stands for rate of perceived exertion — a rating of how hard a set felt. The version used in the gym runs from 1 to 10 and is anchored directly to reps in reserve: RPE 10 means you had nothing left (0 reps in reserve), 9 means roughly one rep left, 8 means about two, and so on. This resistance-training-specific scale was formalised by Zourdos and colleagues in 2016, who found RPE ratings tracked how fast the bar actually moved — faster reps felt easier, slower reps harder — an association that was strongest in experienced lifters, which supported the scale as a way to gauge effort (Zourdos et al., 2016).
Why rate effort at all? Because the same weight is a different challenge from day to day: a load that's a comfortable 8 one week might be a hard 9 after a poor night's sleep. Rating each set tells your programme whether the weight is still doing its job. Helms and colleagues describe exactly this use — an RIR-based RPE scale lets you equalise effort across sessions and adjust load to match how ready you are on the day (Helms et al., 2016).
The mistake to avoid: RPE measures effort, not exhaustion. A set can leave you breathless without being close to failure, and a heavy triple can be a true RPE 9 while barely raising your heart rate. Rate how many reps you had left, not how tired you feel.
Beginners find RPE hard to judge at first, and that's expected — accuracy improves once you've trained close to failure a few times and learned what one or two reps in reserve genuinely feels like. Load and intensity: the word beginners get wrong
Load is simply the weight you're lifting — 60 kg on the bar, a 12 kg dumbbell. Straightforward. The term that trips people up is intensity.
In everyday speech, an "intense" workout is a sweaty, exhausting one. In resistance training, intensity means something specific and different: the load relative to your maximum, written as a percentage of your one-rep max — the sense the American College of Sports Medicine uses throughout its training guidance (ACSM, 2009). A set of 5 reps at 85% of your max is high-intensity whether or not it leaves you winded; a 20-rep set on a light machine can be exhausting yet low-intensity. Confusing the two leads beginners to chase fatigue when the load itself is what drives most of the adaptation.
That percentage is anchored to your one-rep max, or 1RM: the heaviest weight you could lift for a single repetition. You rarely need to test it directly — risky for a novice — because it can be estimated from a set you've already done: lift a weight for 5 hard reps and a formula approximates the single you'd manage. The kinds of exercise
Exercises fall into two broad families. A compound exercise moves several joints and muscle groups at once — the squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, and row are the classics. An isolation exercise targets mainly one muscle at a single joint: a biceps curl, a leg extension, a lateral raise. Most beginner programmes are built around compounds, because they train a lot of muscle for your time and carry over to everyday strength, with isolations added to top up specific areas.
You'll also hear equipment split into free weights (barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells — you control the path of the weight) and machines (the path is fixed, which can feel more stable while you're learning). Neither is inherently superior; both build muscle and strength. Movements using one limb at a time are unilateral (a single-leg press, a one-arm row), and smaller supporting movements are often called accessories. How a training week is structured
Volume is how much work you do. The most useful count for muscle growth is the number of hard working sets a muscle receives per week — if your chest gets four sets of bench press and three of a press-up, that's roughly seven weekly sets. A large review found muscle growth tends to rise as weekly sets increase, at least up to a point, which is why volume is tracked so closely (Schoenfeld et al., 2017a). You may also see it written as sets × reps × weight, sometimes called volume load — a more granular measure. Both are valid. Frequency is how often you train a given muscle or movement across the week — squatting twice a week is a frequency of two. Split describes how you divide your training across days: a full-body split trains everything each session, an upper/lower split alternates halves of the body, and a push/pull/legs split groups movements by pattern.
A couple of intensity techniques have their own names. A superset is two exercises performed back to back with no rest between them, which saves time and adds a metabolic challenge. A drop set extends a set past failure by quickly reducing the weight and continuing. Both have their place, but neither is necessary for a beginner — plain working sets, done consistently, drive the great majority of progress.
How training progresses over time
The single most important word here is progressive overload: gradually increasing the demand you place on your body — a little more weight, a few more reps, an extra set — so it has a reason to keep adapting. It's the principle behind every long-term gain, and it's worth understanding in its own right. Give your body the same challenge forever and progress stops.
What are you progressing towards? Often hypertrophy — the growth of muscle size — or maximal strength, or muscular endurance. These overlap heavily but sit on a rough continuum of rep ranges: lower reps with heavier loads lean towards strength, moderate reps towards size, higher reps towards endurance. The lines are blurry — a meta-analysis found that muscle growth was similar across a wide span of loads when sets were taken to or close to failure, while maximal strength clearly favoured heavier weights (Schoenfeld et al., 2017b). So for size you have real freedom in how you train; for strength, heavier loads matter more.
Progress is never a straight line. A plateau or stall is when a lift stops improving for several sessions despite honest effort — a signal to change something, not evidence you've failed. One planned response is a deload: a lighter week, with reduced load or volume, that lets accumulated fatigue clear so your underlying fitness can show through.
Deloads are part of periodisation — deliberately varying training over time rather than repeating the same thing indefinitely. Two more terms round out progression. Autoregulation means adjusting a session to how you perform on the day — using RPE to add load when a lift feels easy, or hold back when it doesn't — rather than following fixed numbers regardless (Helms et al., 2016).
You may also meet the volume landmarks MEV, MAV and MRV — minimum effective, maximum adaptive, and maximum recoverable volume: the least weekly work a muscle needs to grow, the range where it grows best, and the most it can recover from. They're a helpful practical framework rather than precise, individually measurable thresholds, and they vary widely between people — so treat them as a map, not exact coordinates.

What's the difference between reps and sets?
A rep is one full movement of an exercise; a set is a group of reps done back to back before you rest. "3 × 10" means three sets of ten reps, with a rest between each set.
What RPE should a beginner train at?
Most beginners do well keeping working sets around RPE 7–8 — roughly two to three reps short of failure. That's challenging enough to drive progress while you're still learning technique and how to judge effort, and it leaves a margin for the days you misjudge the weight.
Do I need to lift to failure?
No. Training close to failure — a rep or two in reserve — captures most of the benefit for the great majority of your sets, with less fatigue and lower injury risk than repeatedly training to the absolute limit. Occasional sets to failure can help you calibrate what your reps in reserve actually feel like, but they needn't be the default.
What's the difference between training for strength and for size?
They overlap far more than most people think, and the same programme builds both. The rough distinction is load: maximal strength favours heavier weights and lower reps, while muscle size can be built across a wide range of loads as long as sets are taken reasonably close to failure. For a beginner, chasing one will largely deliver the other.
