The honest answer to "how much training volume do you actually need?" is: probably less than the internet implies to grow at all, a moderate range to grow well, and a ceiling beyond which extra sets mostly add fatigue rather than muscle.

What counts as training volume?
Volume can be quantified a few ways — total load lifted (sets × reps × weight), total reps, or simply the number of working sets. A systematic review found that counting hard sets is a valid, practical way to quantify volume for hypertrophy (Baz-Valle et al., 2021).
So if you train chest twice a week and do four hard sets each session, that's eight weekly sets for chest. How much volume builds muscle?
Here the evidence is unusually consistent: more volume tends to produce more muscle, but along a curve that flattens.
A meta-analysis of weekly volume and muscle growth found a graded relationship — each additional weekly set was associated with roughly a 0.37% increase in muscle size, with around 10 or more sets per muscle per week linked to near-maximal gains for many people (Schoenfeld et al., 2017). A later systematic review in trained young men landed on a practical range of about 12–20 weekly sets per muscle as a sensible target, and — importantly — found no clear advantage for going above that for most muscles, with the triceps a notable exception that kept responding to higher volumes (Baz-Valle et al., 2022).
The most comprehensive analysis to date, a 2026 meta-regression pooling 67 studies and over 2,000 participants, confirmed the shape of the curve: muscle size keeps rising as volume increases, but each added set tends to be worth a little less than the last (Pelland et al., 2026).
Put together, that gives a usable picture rather than a magic number:

Do you need as much volume for strength?
If your goal is strength rather than size, you need less volume than the numbers above. The same 2026 meta-regression found that strength also improves with more volume, but with considerably steeper diminishing returns than muscle growth — strength gains flatten out sooner (Pelland et al., 2026).
That fits how strength works. Getting stronger is largely about progressively overloading heavy lifts and practising them well, not about accumulating huge set counts. A handful of quality hard sets on the main lifts, progressed over time, takes you a long way. Volume is the muscle-growth lever; for strength, load and skill do more of the work.
What are MEV, MAV and MRV?
If you've read about volume online, you've met the "volume landmarks" — a framework popularised by Renaissance Periodization and coach Mike Israetel. They're a helpful way to think about the dose-response curve in plain terms:
- MEV — Minimum Effective Volume: the least you can do and still grow. Below it, you mostly maintain.
- MAV — Maximum Adaptive Volume: the range where you get the most growth for the fatigue you accumulate — the sweet spot.
- MRV — Maximum Recoverable Volume: the most you can do and still recover from. Push past it and fatigue outpaces adaptation, so progress stalls.
The idea is intuitive and genuinely useful: sensible programmes start a training block near MEV, add sets over the weeks toward MAV, and back off with a deload before fatigue piles up at MRV. It turns the flat-then-falling curve into something you can actually programme around.
Where the landmarks over-promise
Here's the honest caveat, because it matters. MEV, MAV and MRV are a practical model, not measured quantities. There is no test that tells you your MRV for quads is 18 sets and your MEV is 8. The peer-reviewed evidence gives population ranges — the 10-ish and 12–20 figures above — not personal landmarks.
They also move. Your recoverable volume shifts with sleep, stress, nutrition, training experience, exercise selection, and how close to failure you train. The same lifter can have a very different MRV in a busy, under-slept week than in a calm one. Treat the landmarks as a way of thinking — start moderate, build up, back off before you're buried — rather than numbers to chase to the decimal.
So how much do you actually need?
Stripped to the practical, here's a defensible approach for most recreational lifters.
- Start around 10 hard sets per muscle per week. For most trained lifters this is close to the near-maximal zone, and it's recoverable. Beginners can grow well on less — often 4–8 sets — and shouldn't rush to add more.
- Add sets only while you're still progressing and recovering. If a muscle has stopped responding and you're recovering well, adding a couple of sets a week is a reasonable next step.
- Watch for the ceiling. When performance dips, sleep suffers, or sessions feel draining rather than productive, you've likely gone past what you can recover from. That's the signal to hold or reduce, not push.
- Deload periodically. Cutting volume for a week lets accumulated fatigue clear — the same block-and-recover rhythm that keeps long-term progress possible.
Notice this is autoregulation applied to volume: add while it's working, ease off when it isn't. You don't need to know your exact MRV — you need to notice when you've crossed it.
Common volume mistakes
Chasing ever-more sets ("junk volume"). Once you're past your adaptive range, extra sets mostly add fatigue without adding muscle. More work is not automatically more progress, and it can slow you by eating into recovery.
Counting volume carelessly. Sixteen sets of chest a week is very different from four sets you called hard but stopped well short of failure. Volume only counts if the sets are genuinely challenging — junk sets and hard sets are not interchangeable.
Ignoring the recovery half. Volume you can't recover from isn't a bigger stimulus; it's a smaller one, because fatigue blunts the adaptation. The most volume that helps is the most you can recover from — not the most you can survive.
Running the same volume forever. Sitting at one fixed set count indefinitely ignores that your needs change — higher as you advance, lower when life is stressful, and worth resetting after a deload.
How do you find your own numbers?
You don't measure them — you read the signals. Three questions answer most of it:
- Are you progressing? If lifts and reps are still climbing, your current volume is working. If they've stalled and recovery is fine, a small increase may help.
- Are you recovering? Persistent soreness, dropping performance, poor sleep, and flat motivation suggest you're near or past your recoverable ceiling.
- How hard are the sets, really? RPE — rate of perceived exertion keeps you honest about whether your "hard sets" are actually hard, which is what makes a set count.
